The EU directive on the Energy Rating of Buildings (EPBD) will require that Ireland has a cohort of trained assessors to energy rate new domestic buildings. CIT will be running both accelerated training courses and evening training courses for BER assessors for suitably qualified candidates.

The course will cover the following areas:
- Updates to the DEAP software and learning outcomes
- Survey methodology for existing dwellings
- New building regulations
- Health and safety considerations
Students will also be taken offsite to assess an “existing” dwelling. In order to become a BER assessor for existing dwellings, assessors will need to pass a national exam set by SEI. The cost for sitting this exam is likely to be in the region of €100. SEI are set to release details of this exam in November. The purpose of this update course is to prepare BER assessors of new dwellings for this national exam. The update course is informative only.
Please NOTE: Approval to assess existing dwellings is dependant on the student passing the National Exam as set by SEI.

The course will focus on the background theory to building energy performance application of this knowledge to the use of the Dwelling Energy Assessment Performance (DEAP) software.
Entry Requirements
N.B. Level 6 (National Certificate/ Higher Certificate) qualification in Building Services, Construction Studies or related discipline such as Civil, Architecture or Structural Engineering.
Application Procedure
Applicants should post or e-mail a CV (clearly indicating educational qualification) to CIT CAMMS centre. Applicants will be dealt with on a first come first served basis.
Duration
Two evenings a week for eight weeks.
Awarding Body
- Successful candidates are awarded five credits at level seven on the NFQ.
- Candidates achieving a 70% overall mark for continuous assessments, a short answer question assessment and a practical final exam will be eligible to register with SEI to sit the BER assessor exam.
